National Center for Creative Crafts

Location: Wilayat Al Seeb, Muscat Governorate, Sultanate of Oman.

Design Concept:
The idea of the project was formed with the aim of creating a building with a very distinctive appearance in the emerging Sultan Haitham City in the capital Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, reflecting the Sultanate's interest in the creative energies of traditional handicrafts and to establish an extraordinary landmark that the Sultanate can be proud of.

The overall appearance of the project blends contemporary features with traditional crafts through the combination of perpendicular geometric lines that form the prominent mass of the building and the solid blocks characteristic of Omani architecture, such as forts and castles that rise from the ground. The project consists of two masses: the first is a modern white structure surrounding a mass formed by transparent glass panels (the administration and workshops), and the second is the main base of the project (the halls, exhibitions, and theater), where the solid mass merges with the undulating terrain characteristic of the Sultanate of Oman.

To create a surprising visual element that adds strength to the work, several large rocks were placed at various corners of the project. One of these large rocks was attractively suspended, giving the building and its surrounding area a wonderful and beautiful appearance, highlighting the importance of the earth in providing the raw material for handicrafts and the Omani people's connection to it.

The entrances were distributed at multiple levels according to the functional needs of the building, and green spaces were opened on the sides of the building and in areas of the contour that resemble the lines of Jebel Akhdar, which formed the sloping roof of the building's base to create a sense of sustainability and interaction with the Omani environmental context.
