Al Zahra College

Location: Karbala, Iraq

Design Year: 2022

Project Type: Educational

Architectural Style: Modern

Concept:
The Al-Zahra University complex served as both a visual reference and an extension for the new project. The design aims to create an innovative and engaging environment for students, harmonizing the new façades with the original building through the use of traditional Arabic architectural elements. The arches follow the classical three-centered Arabic arch, deeply rooted in Iraqi and Karbala Islamic architecture. Local materials, including traditional bricks and white finishes, are combined with elegant glass panels protected by mashrabiya screens. These screens draw inspiration from Karbala’s heritage of palm frond craftsmanship and colorful woven mats, filtering sunlight gracefully throughout the spaces. A central strategic goal of the project was to emphasize the city’s local identity, drawing directly from its authentic architectural heritage to create a contemporary yet culturally resonant campus environment.
