Al Saaf Mosque
Location: Birkat Al Mouz, Sultanate of Oman
Built Area: 550 m²
Design Year: 2024
Project Type: Religious
Architectural Style: Islamic
Concept:
Situated in Birkat Al-Mawz, a lush palm-filled area of Nizwa, Oman, this mosque occupies a modest footprint of 550 m² and includes men’s and women’s prayer halls, service areas, and a caretaker’s residence.
The mosque is oriented along the qibla axis and sits perpendicular to its outer entrances. Arcades with intermittent walls frame the central courtyard, while the minaret—aligned with the visual axis of entry—houses ablution facilities at its base.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Omani rural architecture, the mosque avoids domes and decorative arches, relying instead on simple geometric forms and straight horizontal beams. Palm fronds are used in the construction of the minaret, arcade roofs, and the mihrab area.
Finishes emphasize local, sustainable materials, including light sarooj plaster and Nizwa stone, reinforcing a connection to the region’s architectural heritage.
